Who is the fairest of them all: Beauty tips for pale skin

April 4, 2012

Claudia Schiffer, Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway…three gorgeous women with fair, beautiful skin and radiant complexions. But their skin is also extremely delicate and suffers the effects of sunlight. If you have fair skin, either skin type 1 or 2, then yours is also more vulnerable to UV rays.

These skin types hardly ever tan, and when they do, will probably burn first. That’s why you must take extra precautions when exposing yourself to sunlight. The advantage of these skin types is that they’re not usually oily, but that also makes them more fragile and prone to redness.

The three main challenges for skin types 1 and 2 are:

  • Thin wrinkles, not necessarily well-defined, but more frequent in the more fragile parts of the skin, such as around the eyes
  • A tendency to become more flaccid and limp, especially in the jaw area, since fair skin tends to droop more
  • The appearance of whiteheads provoked by a lack of regular exfoliation and an oil increase in the pores

Pamper your skin with three top tips for protecting fair complexions and maintaining its youthful appearance:

  • Moisturize. Use moisturizing cream daily. It should include SPF 15 in order to preserve the collagen and elastic fibres of your skin tissue
  • Careful with exposure to the sun! Avoid overexposure to the sun at all costs because it can cause sunburn, especially severe on fair skin. Therefore, when starting to sunbathe, do it progressively, starting with short amounts of time and building up to more. But, however long you sunbathe for, always use sun cream with a minimum of SPF 15.
  • Vitamin C. A diet rich in vitamin C can help preserve the quality and defenses of your skin tissue. This vitamin can be found in citrus fruits such as kiwis and strawberries. Bell peppers, leafy greens and fresh herbs are also good sources. More on skin care
