The first Monday in May is possibly the most exciting evening in the fashion calendar – being the Met Gala. It's the night where the who's who of the style world join US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute to raise funds for the museum. Each year the charity benefit has a fabulous dress theme; last year it was 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination'. Now the theme for the 2019 Met Ball has been announced – and it's pretty amazing. The theme is 'Camp: Notes on Fashion' with the Gala taking place on 6 May. That gives the stars seven months to plan their outfits.
Lady Gaga is a co-host at the 2019 gala
This year's co-chairs to Anna Wintour have caused quite a buzz already – they are singer Lady Gaga, former One Direction star Harry Styles, tennis player Serena Williams and Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele.

The museum shared news of the theme on its Instagram page and revealed: "It will explore the origins of the camp aesthetic and how it has evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture. "Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’” provides the framework for the exhibition, which will examine how fashion designers have used their métier as a vehicle to engage with camp in compelling, humorous, and sometimes incongruous ways."
Serena Williams is also a 2019 co-host
The Met Costume Institute's curator, Andrew Bolton, told The New York Times: “We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures. Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it’s very timely.”
