These beauty hacks are total game changers

How we chose:

  • Ease and efficacy: Our handpicked beauty hacks are designed to make your routine smoother and simpler - hence they are all quick, effective and require little to no technical skill.
  • Performance and personal testimony: The accompanying beauty buys are products that I (Hello! Fashion's resident beauty obsessive Orin Carlin) personally really rate.

Hello! Fashion shares the beauty hacks that will revolutionise your routine:

1. Frozen Spoons

Do you often wake up in the morning looking slightly worse for wear even though your sleep app reliably informs you that you did in fact get your eight hours? You're not alone, and one of the best ways of ridding your eyes of their puffiness is by using a cryotherapy tool.

Reluctant to splash out on an expensive set of ice globes? A great substitute is to freeze two metal spoons overnight and then gently press them under your eyes. This hack is often used by top makeup artists on celebrity clients with super early call times to help them look refreshed and is practically foolproof. No skill necessary.

2. The Genius Facial Tanner

If you're wanting to cheat your way to bronzed skin without exposing your skin to any UV rays, facial tanning drops are a beauty godsend. Simply mix a couple of drops in with your usual moisturiser and reap the benefits of your newfound no-sunbathing-required radiance.

Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil - M&S

Autograph by M&S' Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil is totally brilliant and affordable. Despite being marketed as an oil, it has a lightweight, almost water-like, texture which means it can absolutely be applied under makeup for a super flattering, natural glow that develops over the course of a few hours.

3. The Stay-All-Day Mascara

If you find that your mascara constantly tends to migrate south, a tubing mascara could be the answer to your prayers. The formula is different to ordinary mascara in that it coats lashes with polymers rather than thick layers of pigment. Once applied, the polymers dry to form a tube-like casing over each individual lash. Tubing mascara has water-resistant properties and is less likely to smudge.

Double Wear Zero-Smudge Lengthening Mascara - Estée Lauder

As a serial smudger, Estée Lauder's Double Wear mascara is a trusty old friend. I love how fine the wand is - ideal for clean bottom lash application - and it can also be layered over a more volumising mascara to lock it all in place.

4. Cream-Powder Layer

Have countless primers and setting sprays left you dissatisfied? One way one helping your makeup last throughout the day is by doubling up on formula. Cream blushes and bronzers can be topped up with their powder counterparts for maximum staying power.

5. Bank Card Eyeliner

Beauty journalist Sali Hughes has changed our lives with this genius way of applying eyeliner if you struggle with precision – grab a clean bank card, line it up with the outer corner of your eye and use the side of the card to help you get the perfect wing.

6. "Lip Flip" Hack

Kim Kardashian's long-time makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is famed for his legendary "lip flip" hack. The trick involves using a lip liner to follow your natural upper lip line, but overlining your cupid's bow as well as the lower centre of your bottom lip to achieve a fuller, more lifted effect.

7. Hairspray Brows

Only ever when you're in a rush does the product that you need disappear into thin air. Never fear – if you've misplaced your clear brow gel, one easy way to set your brows is to spritz a fine mist of hairspray onto a spoolie and brush your hairs upwards, giving you an effortless feathered brow moment in seconds.

8. Mascara Spoolie Trick

Prepare to have your mind blown – this hack is perfect if your dexterity levels leave a lot to be desired. If when applying your mascara you accidentally get some product on your eyelid, don't immediately scrub it with a cotton bud. Instead wait until the flecks are completely dry, then rub them with clean eyebrow spoolie and they disappear in an instant. Magic!

9. Root Volume Boost

Dry shampoo needn't only be used when you are between washes. In fact, industry experts often use the product on clean hair to create volume at the roots because of its powdery quality – meaning it separates the hairs and is perfect for achieving a thicker-looking effect.

Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo - Hair by Sam McKnight
Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo - Hair by Sam McKnight

Hair by Sam McKnight's Lazy Girl is one of my favourite dry shampoo formulas because of how seamless and non-chalky it feels in comparison to some cheaper versions I've tried. Refreshing and lightweight, it feels unobtrusive. Also, the scent, a blend of frankincense, juniper wood and water lily, was created with the help of perfumer powerhouse Lyn Harris - and it shows.

10. Feathery Soap Brows

Wanting to nail the feathered brow look? Look no further than your bathroom sink. Take a bar of glycerin soap, spritz it with some water and coat a brow spoolie with the mixture. Comb your hairs upwards and they will stay brushed up, giving off a gorgeous, feather-like effect.
