The Duchess of Sussex is an American by birth, a Brit through marriage, and a Scandinavian through her closet. We love her for her ever-elegant, put-together style and her plethora of capsule pieces. This style also means we can easily find a replica of her pieces we love – or the same thing if she’s wearing a high street hero. We know she loves an M&S jumper.
More recently, Meghan has eschewed her scandi-style minimalism and stunned whilst sporting brighter hues, like the elegant red gown by Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera she wore to the Intrepid Museum, and her super chic green keyhole dress from Emilia Wickstead for her appearance at the Women's Fund of Central Indiana event.

The style icon tells us in her new Netflix series Harry and Meghan, the poignant reason why colour was eschewed in her formal outings when still a working royal, (and it wasn’t just because her usual sartorial style is neutral-hued.)
She explains, "Most of the time that I was in the U.K. I rarely wore colour—there was thought in that." She continues, “To my understanding, you could never wear the same colour as Her Majesty if there's a group event, but then you also shouldn't be wearing the same colour as one of the other more senior members of the family. So I was like, 'Well, what's a colour that they'll probably never wear?' Camel, beige, white... so I wore a lot of muted tones, but it was also so I could just blend in. I'm not trying to stand out here. There was no version of me joining this family and me not doing everything I could to fit in."

Ironically, minimalism – as championed by Meghan’s royal wardrobe – is actually bang on trend. With tailored separates, plenty of neutral knitwear and oversized blazers – pieces bought are pretty evergreen, and can be added to something bright and patterned when feeling bold.
Like many of us (yes, myself included) who are not fans of standing out in social circumstances, we can opt for garments of white, grey, brown and black tones, while still looking put together and effortlessly chic, a la Meghan.
Meghan's "hero piece" - the camel coat
The hashtag #meghanmarklestyle has 98 million views on TikTok, proving that her relaxed-chic motto is anything but dull. Fashion stylist Miranda Holder discussed Meghan’s muted-toned “hero piece” in a TikTok posted on her account @themirandaholder saying “Meghan is known for her minimalist, chic, and often understated style, but she relies on one hero piece in her wardrobe [...]”. She continues "It is simply the camel coat. The camel coat is the ultimate neutral piece that effortlessly upgrades and elevates any outfit.”
Markle is the chic owner of the camel Max Mara coat that literally everybody has or wants.
Miranda Holder also explains, "Meghan's wardrobe consists mainly of easy to mix-and-match neutrals, and she relies upon her hero piece that camel coat and multi shades of camel but they're all neutral, to instantly add some polish and lift to every single look."
Whether she’s wearing colour or not, there’s one guarantee - Meghan is always a vision of sophistication.
