Emily Ratajkowski opens up about the experience she "wanted from modelling but so rarely got"

Between fuelling our designer ski wear addiction and nailing the courtside comfort look, somehow Emily Ratajkowski still has time to star in one of the most iconic projects in the modelling sphere. The 31-year-old is the latest supermodel to grace 'The Cal', the annual trade calendar published by Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli.

Since the brand unveiled its 2023 calendar last month, Emily has taken to Instagram to share with her 29.7m followers what being selected for the prestigious project meant to her on a personal level.

In the past, the My Body author has been open about the moments of her career that have fallen short of her expectations, instances during which she was made to feel uncomfortable on set. But Emily was hugely keen to sing the praises of photographer Emma Summerton, who shot the Pirelli calendar, and offer her profuse gratitude for being picked as one of Emma's "muses".

The supermodel explained that she couldn't even recall when she began dreaming about being in the calendar, because she always perceived it as "an unattainable fantasy".

"Pirelli images represented the experience I wanted from modelling but so rarely got: being a part of something that felt more like art than advertising or even fashion, something sensual yet beautiful that honoured the women in the images," Emily revealed in the caption of her post.

"It’s been a magical year of surreal moments, but being lensed by @emmasummerton as one of her muses, (“The Writer” at that!) might top them all. For the picture Emma took inspiration from the John Berger quote that opens my book, but I think there are many levels of meaning to the mirror in this context."

"Thank you to the entire team @pirelli, @piergiorgio for including me, @emmasummerton for these amazing pictures and the incredible group of artists (@hiromi_ueda @eugenesouleiman ) who came together to perfect every detail in these images. Being on set was a truly extraordinary experience. Thank you!"

The striking images have an almost piratical feel, with Emily posing in an avant-garde hat, an exquisite lace robe, and a ruff around her neck.

What is the 2023 Pirelli calendar about?

This year, the calendar is entitled 'Love Letters to the Muse', and each model has been selected for their embodiment of the talents and traits that photographer Emma Summerton wanted to reference.

Other models in this year's calendar include: Bella Hadid (The Sprite), Sasha Pivovarova (The Painter), Ashley Graham (The Activist), Adut Akech (The Dream Catcher), Kaya Wilkins (The Musician), Lila Moss (The Seer), Cara Delevingne (The Performer), Adwoa Aboah (The Queen) and He Cong (The Sage).
