Katie Holmes' stylist just defended her Y2K 'dress over jeans' viral outfit

"Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here"

December 14, 2022

A couple of days ago Katie Holmes wore Y2K’s iconic 'mini dress and jeans combo', and the internet is still not over it

The actress attended iHeartRadio Z100’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden on December 9 in New York wearing a mini dress (which was actually a top from Tove's SS23 collection) layered over jeans. The internet went wild over the 'lewk'. Some have applauded her boldness, and others have not been keen on the fashion statement.

Since then her stylist Brie Welch has come out publicly to defend the star’s choice of outfit, "We decided the rich color and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans," Welch explained in an email to the New York Times, that the intent was to create "a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there."

Defending the choice of pairing the ensemble with New Balance trainers Brie explained, "On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!)" The New York-based stylist and creative consultant went on to say that the star is "more than capable of looking cool in an unintentional trend 20 years later."

Katie's outfit was a throwback to the early 2000's

"The Y2K trend has been trending for what feels like an age now, and yet, somehow the fashion world remains utterly captivated by the 2000s-inspired aesthetic," explains Hello! Fashion’s Orin Carlin, "If stepping back in time fills you with intense dread rather than a warm glow of nostalgia, you might want to sit this one out. Pop princesses who defined the era – think Anastacia, Destiny's Child, and, of course, Britney Spears – led the way in denim corsets, tinted shades, ultra-low-waisted jeans, and pretty much anything diamanté."

The era was of course also defined by pairing long tops, tunics and dresses over baggy jeans, if anyone can revive this once dormant trend it's Katie.
