Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie both nailed the 'ultra-chic outerwear' assignment on Thursday, passing with flying colours. The sisters supported the rest of the royal family at Westminster Abbey to attend the annual 'Together at Christmas' carol service, looking chic in coats that showed off their incredibly similar fashion tastes.

Recently we've been lusting after decadent faux furs and glitzy overcoats, but the princesses collectively provided us with an important sartorial reminder – a piece of outerwear that exudes understated elegance is a total seasonal must-have.

Don't get us wrong, we adore a coat that brings major drama, but when it comes to dressing for an occasion that requires an air of sophistication, neutrals are clearly the way to go.

The annual service, supported by The Royal Foundation, was attended by many other members of the institution, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as Prince George and Princess Charlotte. This year's event was held to commemorate the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II and honour the values that she upheld throughout.

Princess Beatrice looked radiant alongside her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a cream checked wool-blend coat featuring light grey stripes and a fine houndstooth pattern. The twill-weave piece, designed by Temperley London, had a sleek collar, waist-level belt tie and shiny gold buttons, embossed with the brand's cursive 'T' logo.

Trench-inspired details were all the rage on Thursday, with Princess Eugenie, who attended alongside her husband Jack Brooksbank, also sporting a piece that nodded to the classic coat style. Featuring a wide lapel collar, cuff tab-embellished raglan sleeves, double-breasted buttons, and a unique fringed hem, the Weekend Max Mara coat is now sitting at the top of our Christmas wish list. Showing off their similar fashion tastes, Princess Eugenie also cinched in her waist via a handy belt tie, and rocked the camel coat’s houndstooth pattern with a certain royal flair.
