We’re not even 24 hours into the new year, but celebrity fashionistas might have just kicked off a new trend already, and it’s one we were not expecting.
Dua Lipa hands down stole the show last night wearing an incredible halter neck crystal dress from Ludovic de Saint Sermin to a New Year’s Eve party with family and friends. The Levitating singer gave NYE glam the ultimate sexy makeover in the backless dress. But it wasn’t the dazzling embellishments that caught people’s eyes, it was the white thong completely visible as ‘backless’ was taken to a whole new level. And social media is either loving it or hating it.

She posted the images to her Instagram account saying “??2023 ~ Happy New Year ~ wishing you peace, love, health and happiness for this year ahead x”.
Regardless whether you are a fan of the trend or not (note: we are), she looked mesmerising, and paired with the ultimate pink knee high boots to create a look that combined two of 2022’s biggest trends – Barbiecore and Mermaidcore.

The drama didn’t stop there, as she paired the ensemble with mega diamante dangle earrings and a silver cuff bracelet. Her hair was swept up into a half-up half-down ponytail to let her outfit take centre stage.

It seems the sheer dress trend of 2022 is being elevated for the coming year, with sheer material becoming less material altogether, as Hailey Bieber also wore a thong dress to celebrate the turn of the new year. She sported a LBD from Mugler, and the bodycon number consisted of a bodysuit which gave the illusion of major thong exposure, with an ultra mini skirt over the top.
The trend is for an acquired taste, but Dua and Hailey absolutely nailed it.
