Billy Porter recreated his classic tuxedo moment in Pantone's Colour of the year

Viva Magenta "is a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all"

In 2019, actor Billy Porter took androgynous dressing and gave it a whole new meaning when he stepped out on the red carpet at the Oscars wearing the most epic tuxedo gown.

That’s right – a literal black tuxedo jacket with satin lapels, layered over a crisp white shirt with ruffle sleeves and finished with a black bow tie. The top half then flowed down into a cinderella-style ball gown (ironic seeing as he now plays the Fairy Godmother in the 2021 eponymous film), and fashion fans went absolutely wild.

Billy's iconic 2019 Oscars look

After the event Billy explained the significance of the ensemble to E! News: “I wanted to create a space where we can have a dialogue about the masculine and the feminine and everything in between,”.

It was only right that a silhouette so iconic has its moment more than once, and what better time to reinvent the gown in a vibrant pink, when dopamine dressing is all the rage? Porter turned to his friend and designer Christian Siriano again for this year’s tuxedo gown in Pantone’s colour of the year – Viva Magenta. Christian posted an image of his Instagram saying “Was happy to create the tuxedo gown then and happy to create a new version now! Always and forever #ryanmurphy @theebillyporter @ryanmurphyproductions ??????? #itisinamuseum”.

Fuschia pink was the colour of the moment in 2022. The ‘Barbiecore’ trend dominated the social media fashion sphere and it soon made its way onto the red carpet on multiple occasions, and Valentino released their Pink PP collection. This more muted Magenta pink hue made its way into London Fashion week in 2022, with Emily Ratajkowski notably wearing a tonal crimson Nensi Dojaka dress on the runway. It was appropriate that Pantone continued championing a similar colour palette.

On their website Pantone said “Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative... It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.”
