Not all public engagements are created equal – royal fashion fans will be used to seeing the Princess of Wales exuding polish and sophistication in her go-to midi dress-and-heels combos or scaling up the drama in a show stopping Jenny Packham gown, but today it is one of her more low-key looks that has garnered our interest.
On Wednesday Princess Kate came through with a casual outfit which scaled back her usual level of formality, expertly devised to suit a very specific type of public duty.
The 41-year-old visited Landau Forte College in Derby to celebrate army officer Captain Preet Chandi's world-breaking achievement – the furthest solo polar expedition in Antarctica in history.

Marking Captain Chandi's return from her icy venture, the princess got stuck in and tried her hand at one of the training exercises which involved pulling two heavy tyres.
The royal mother-of-three put her physical skills to the test after removing her jacket, a piece of affordable tailoring.

She wore a stylish textured blazer from high street label Zara which featured sharp shoulder pads, flap pockets and a double-breasted design, embellished with gold-toned buttons.
Princess Kate's choice of outerwear was coloured in a stylish creamy ecru shade and currently retails at £69.99. Unfortunately, the piece is currently sold out online – but it is also available in two other shades.
The vibrant fuchsia version would be perfect for those wanting to inject some Barbiecore magic into their work wardrobes, whereas the classic black colourway would no doubt go down a treat, teamed with a shimmery midi dress and kitten slingbacks.

The royal styled her own ultra-versatile ecru version with a cashmere crew neck knit, crepe navy cigarette trousers by LK Bennett and rewore her beloved gold-trimmed white trainers by sustainable footwear label Veja – a brand also favoured by Meghan Markle.
If only our own workout wardrobe looked quite so elegant…
