The event commemorates the anniversary of the 2004 Madrid train bombings, known in Spain as 11M. The service pays tribute to those who were victims of a series of coordinated, simultaneous bombings against the Cercanías commuter train system of Madrid, which occured on the morning of 11 March 2004. three days before Spain's general elections. The explosions killed 193 people and injured around 2,000. At the time the bombings constituted the deadliest terrorist attack carried out in the history of Spain and the deadliest in Europe since 1988.

King Felipe wore a dark pinstripe suit with a black tie for the sombre occassion, while Letizia flew the flag for her home nation by respectfully wearing Spanish cult-brand Cortana – a label both she and Princess Miriam al-Ghazi of Jordan have donned before. She paired the gown with her sensible pointed toe pumps from Prada and Nina Ricci black leather clutch, both of which she has worn before, discreetly allowing the attention to remain on the importance of the occasion. The dress demonstrated a practical elegance befitting of the occasion, with a round neckline and long sleeves, married with a chic ankle-skimming length. The ruching throughout created a relaxed draping effect.

The Spanish royal couple have attended the event on a yearly basis going back to 2009, this year fellow distinguished guests included Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska and the Mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez Almeida.
