The Gateway of India became the gateway of sartorial heaven last night, as Dior transformed the 20th century monument into a breathtaking runway. Adorned with cheerful marigold and traditional diya lamps, it became the ideal backdrop for creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri to showcase her 2023 pre-fall collection that pays tribute to traditional Indian craft.

What was Dior's pre-fall collection inspired by?
Bursts of colour, exquisite embroidery and takes on traditional Indian garments nodded to the mastery of the country's sartorial artistry, and Chiuri paid homage to its influence in the fashion sphere within her collection, “I personally wanted to celebrate and showcase the incredible knowledge India offers to the international world of fashion,” she explained in an Instagram post, “In the field of embroidery, the mastery of the artisans who continue to work on this craft, and the commitment of Chanakya’s founders to preserving India’s history and culture, portrayed by each embroidery technique."

Why did Dior's show take place in Mumbai?
Alongside the collection boasting inspiration from Indian heritage, the pieces were handcrafted by the female artisans of the Chanakya School of Embroidery -- a foundation that aims to provide women on low income with a high-quality education, skill development and female empowerment.
Who attended the Dior pre-fall 2023 show?
The most stylish of the celebrity fashion set were invited to Mumbai to watch from the flanks.
