Whilst never straying too far from her ever elegant style schedule, the other dress code currently at the top of Katie Holmes’ sartorial agenda is: utterly unexpected.

We’ve noticed the Dawson's Creek actress adopting continuous experimental looks ever since her love-it-or-hate-it mini dress and jeans combo from British brand Tove. And we have to admit, we’re absolutely in awe.

Stepping out in New York, the 44-year-old took two 2023 cool-girl trends to completely new heights: layering and cut outs. She was promoting her new movie Rare Objects, about a woman who attempts to rebuild her life through a journey of self-discovery.

Holmes wore a long sleeved pinstripe poplin shirt (unsurprising as 'cool tailoring' is a look that's always appeared in her style file) with the buttons fastened to the collar which she tucked in into an asymmetrical pleated mini skirt.

Most people would pair a mini skirt or dress with tights for an extra layer – take Nicola Peltz’s date night dress for example. But, as with many of her outfits of late, Katie went off-piste and wore a grey patterned maxi skirt over the top, with a gaping cut-out at the thigh to let her preppy mini skirt share the limelight. The asymmetrical hem that shortened at the front showed her square-toe white kitten heels that also contained a small hole on the right toe.

Cut-out dressing has been a constant since the beginning of 2022. From Maya Jama in Monot to Julia Garner chanelling the swinging sixties, the daring style has been having a major moment for all occasions. And they are absolutely still a trend to have on your radar for 2023.

From her controversial Y2K mini dress look to unexpected zebra-print sequins, Holmes is officially an abstract style muse and we can't wait to see what else she wears to promote her upcoming movie...
