In her latest column, the TV presenter explains how she's been writing her Christmas cards but they're taking much longer than normal this season, given that she hasn't seen a lot of her friends and family and wants to write special, heartfelt messages to them. She also shows off some of her most treasured Christmas baubles.

So my decorations are up and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. One of the things I love is unwrapping all the Christmas tree decorations as they bring back so many good memories.

I've got baubles that my mum gave to me from her own tree when I first left home and I've got lots of tartan ribbons and decorations I've collected since I was a teenager.

There's also very silly ones from our travels, like penguins surfing on Bondi Beach when we went to Australia years ago, and Santa on a space shuttle that I bought at the Kennedy Space Centre. Then there's the "Christmas Crustacean", a pink and blue shiny hermit crab that my daughter Rosie bought me in Singapore. It's completely fabulous.

I always try to buy at least one new decoration each year, but I didn't have to do that this time because for my birthday my fantastic friend Emma gave me THE most amazing sparkly decorations of Mariah Carey, David Bowie, Anna Wintour and Freddie Mercury. They are works of art and make my tree look really cool.

Of course, the most precious thing that I put on my Christmas tree is the fairy that sits on top. This might just be my most important and treasured possession. Rosie made it when she was in nursery school from cardboard and I've treasured it for over 23 years.

Our fairy is a bit wonky and rough around the edges, but I wouldn't swap her for another one, even if it was made of pure gold encrusted with real rubies and diamonds.

I'm just off to our local shop in the high street to buy poinsettias, more hyacinths and hopefully some real mistletoe. I think these colourful plants are an easy and relatively inexpensive way of making your home look so Christmassy and this year we need every single bit of festive cheer!
