With these easy expert tips you can ensure your plants survive the winter, and avoid common mistakes that may harm them instead of help. William Mitchell, owner of Sutton Manor Nursery, says: "Both your outdoor and indoor plants will need extra care this winter, especially when temperatures drop to below freezing. For your plants to survive the harsh UK climate this winter, preparation and extra care are needed."
Ways to care for your plants this winter:
- Make sure the leaves of your plant are not touching the window.
- Huddle plants together for warmth.
- Relocate your plants to a bright sunny area in your home to maximise their sun exposure.
- Invest in a humidifier. House plants prefer a humid climate so using a humidifier will bring the humidity levels from 20% to 50%, the preferred level for indoor plants.
- Remember indoor plants enter a dormant state during winter months which stunts the growth of the plant. This means they need less water, so adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
- Don't worry about leaf drop as this is normal over winter, especially if your plant is sun or heat dependent. If you experience excess drop make sure you keep your plant in the sun but away from any cold drafts.
