Brad Pitt has reportedly splashed out $40million on a historic home in the celebrity haven of Carmel, California.

The Bullet Train star is now the proud owner of the iconic D.L. James House, known as 'Seaward', in a deal described as "one of the priciest ever closed in the Carmel area" by the Wall Street Journal.

The property was built for Kansas City businessman D.L. James in 1918 by architect Charles Sumner Greene and was later lived in by his son, infamous author Daniel Lewis James, who wrote Famous All Over Town. More recently, the property was owned by Chicago financier Joe Ritchie, who died earlier this year.

According to The Gamble House, an organization dedicated to the work of Charles and his brother Henry, Brad's new home is unlike anything the siblings designed before.

The home sits perilously close to a steep and rocky clifftop just meters from the beach and boasts a "wooden aesthetic". It was built from granite and sandstone quarried from the cliffs.

The Gamble House also states that as part of the design, Charles "built up the outer walls so that they appear to be growing out of the cliffs". He also designed the property so it would not interfere with nature on the plot of land, with trees and shrubs growing around the home since it was first built.

The elaborate stonework is featured throughout the property, and it has an intricate layout of rooms with arched windows and a tiled Mediterranean-style roof.

The house is reported to be about 3,000 square feet, with a service wing for live-in help and a basement-level library on the property.

It's not surprising that Brad was drawn to this home considering he once said: "Whilst acting is my career, architecture is my passion."

This historic home is another addition to the Fight Club star's property portfolio. He also owns a $5million beach house in Goleta, California, which he purchased in 2000 when he married Jennifer Aniston.

His main residence though is his multi-house compound in the Los Feliz neighborhood of L.A., which he's owned since the mid-1990s.
