President Joe Biden announces run for office in 2024 – who are his biggest competitors?

The POTUS will be joined by running mate Kamala Harris

President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday morning that he would be running for the Oval Office once again in 2024.

He shared a video recapping some of his prized moments from the past two years of the presidency, including those with Vice President Kamala Harris, who will once again be his running mate.

"Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That's why I'm running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let's finish the job," his announcement read.

Former President Donald Trump is the leading Republican candidate

Donald Trump – Republican

The former US President (serving from 2017-2021) has frequently made his intentions of running once again well-known after losing to Biden in 2020.

He officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination back in November, and while he is leading in several Republican polls, his recent indictment by a Manhattan grand jury on 34 counts of fraud could pose an obstacle.

Nikki Haley announced she would run for the Republican nomination

Nikki Haley – Republican

The former governor of South Carolina announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination in February, after serving as a United States ambassador to the United Nations under Trump.

Thanks to her Indian-American heritage, she shares something in common with current VP Harris, although their recent stances on subjects like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights have differed drastically.

Vivek Ramaswamy will run for the Republican nod

Vivek Ramaswamy – Republican

37-year-old entrepreneur Ramaswamy announced his bid in February on Tucker Carlson Tonight to run for the Republican vote, his first major foray into politics.

The founder of biopharmaceutical company Roivant Sciences, he has stated that he was inspired by Trump's 2016 run, saying to Politico he wanted to run "with an entrepreneurial spirit, unorthodox ideas, and few expectations, and end up developing a major following that will carry him to the presidency."

Marianne Williamson is bidding for a Democratic nomination

Marianne Williamson – Democratic

Launching her own campaign in March, self-help guru Williamson will be running against incumbent President Biden for the Democratic nomination.

She first announced her presidential candidacy in 2019, but eventually bowed out prior to the primaries and officially endorsed Bernie Sanders, who lost the nomination to Biden.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is vying for a Democratic nomination as well

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – Democratic

The most recent to announce his candidacy, the environmental lawyer officially declared his bid for the democratic vote on April 19, mere days before Biden's own announcement.

With presidential blood running through his family (he is the nephew of beloved former president John F. Kennedy and the fourth from his family to run), he has already come into early controversy thanks to his stances on anti-vaccine propaganda.
