Harold Brown, a former employee of Princess Diana now in the employ of Princess Margaret, will appear in court Wednesday on four counts of theft. Brown is accused of stealing items worth over £1 million from Diana’s former apartments including a jewel-encrusted model Arab dhow – a wedding present from the Emir of Bahrain – and a pair of earrings.
Currently released on bail, Brown is scheduled to appear at Bow Street magistrates’ court. Four men, including the Princess of Wales’ confidante Paul Burrell, have been charged with a series of thefts, thought to have occurred in the period between the Princess’ death and last November. Police arrested Burrell in January during an early morning raid on his Cheshire home. He was released almost immediately on bail.
Investigators first questioned Burrell on the whereabouts of the dhow but later recovered the precious artwork at the London offices of Stephen Dix, a director of auction house Spink And Son. Dix was arrested last month on similar charges.
Four hundred items are believed to be missing, and insiders speculate the items could be worth £6 million. “These are charges with serious implications and we are therefore considering the matter,” said a spokesman for Buckingham Palace.
