The Duchess of York will make her British TV presenting debut on Thursday with a special report on ITV’s current affairs programme, Tonight With Trevor McDonald. Long-time ITV provider Granada approached Fergie to put together a piece on obesity which, because of her empathy with the subject, she agreed to do pro bono.
“We were very impressed with the work she did in America,” a Tonight spokesman said. “We thought she would be perfect to front an investigation into obesity because it’s a subject very close to her heart.”
Sarah, a spokesman for WeightWatchers in the US, has often discussed her own struggles with her weight and now jokes about the names she was called: “Fat, frumpy, freebie Fergie.” “I’ve had first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to be overweight and have the media spotlight on me,” she said. “I think I understand the depression and despair.”
Although producers hope to make Fergie a staple on the popular show, she has also been in talks with BBC Choice to put together a “wacky” chat show for the rival station.
