US President George W Bush’s 19-year-old daughter Jenna is in trouble with the law for the second time in two months after attempting to buy alcohol on Tuesday evening. It is illegal in the United States for those under 21 to purchase alcohol, and police were summoned to Chuy’s Restaurant near the University of Texas at Austin after Jenna presented false identification to the waiter.
“Our understanding is that Jenna Bush was attempting to purchase alcohol with a valid identification that was not hers,” says a spokesman for Austin police. “As no offence was witnessed by Austin Police Department officers, following routine procedures, further investigation is required to determine if any charges will be filed.”
“In this instance, I think the restaurant staff recognized who they were, which may have prompted the call,” says the captain of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which is working closely with the police.
Restaurants and bars found serving anyone under the legal drinking age – 21 across the United States – face heavy fines and may have their liquor licence revoked.
Jenna’s twin sister Barbara, a student at Yale University, was also present but did not show any identification. The White House declined to comment on the situation, saying it was a “private family matter”.
Two weeks ago Jenna pleaded no contest to a charge of “minor in possession of alcohol” after she was caught drinking at a popular public bar, and was forced to pay a $51 dollar fine and attend alcohol awareness classes. The judge who presided over the initial case has suspended the first punishment, pending the outcome of this investigation. Prosecutor John Wall believes the first penalty may be revoked entirely and he says prosecution might seek a conviction.
