EARL SPENCER: 'DIANA WOULD NEVER HAVE MARRIED DODI FAYED'

Just a fortnight before the late Princess Diana would have turned 40, Earl Spencer has expressed his conviction, based on a letter he received from her shortly before her death, that she would not have married Dodi Fayed.

“I never met Dodi,” the Earl told The Mail On Sunday. “I hear he was very nice, but I certainly don’t think she’d have married him. They had spent a total of just 17 days together. She was having a lovely summer romance.”

Charles Spencer, who gave an impassioned speech at his sister’s funeral after she and Dodi died in a Paris car crash in 1997, stated categorically, “No, she wasn’t engaged,” and also crushed the rumour that Diana might have been pregnant at the time of her death. “I never heard any evidence of that,” he said.

The Earl is currently putting the final touches to an exhibition celebrating his sister’s life which is due to open next month at the family estate of Althorp, where Diana lies buried. Paying tribute to the way she lived her life, he said, “I think she so far exceeded the job description that she became threatening. I don’t think people realised how much negative sentiment she had to put up with.”
