While Monday’s costume ball served as a fun start to the 25th wedding anniversary celebrations for King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, royal guests had the chance to display their modern-day elegance Tuesday as a formal dinner brought the two-day event to a close.
Though it had been raining in the Swedish capital, the gloomy weather did nothing to dampen the glamour of the evening. Queen Silvia donned a spectacular white cape and jewelled tiara for the occasion, while her husband King Carl chose a traditional tuxedo. The young Princesses were stunning: Crown Princess Victoria opted for a delicate full-length evening dress with blue flowers, and her younger sister, Princess Madeleine, wore a strapless gown with an elegant wrap.
Many of the royal guests arrived wielding umbrellas to protect them from the falling rain, while others, including King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain and ex-King Constantine of Greece, opted to cover their formal wear with functional raincoats.
In addition to the royals in attendance, the guest list also included the Finnish and Icelandic presidents, Swedish government and parliament representatives and personal friends of the Swedish royal family.
A charity concert held in the Baroque-style park adjacent to Drottningholm Palace preceeded the dinner. The event featured such diverse acts as Spice Girl Melanie C and world-renowned cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. Proceeds from the concert will go to the World Childhood Foundation, a charity Queen Silvia founded in 1999.
