While the fashions at this year’s Ascot Ladies Day may have been slightly more racy than usual, the representatives of three generations of British royal ladies showed that real style has nothing to do with bare shoulders and oversize plumage.
The Queen, the Queen Mother and Princess Anne – who was accompanied by Camilla’s former husband, Andrew Parker Bowles – were a picture of pastel co-ordination in elegant apricot, aquamarine and sugar pink, respectively. The monarch wore a Karl Rehse ensemble topped by a Philip Sommerville hat.
The trio arrived in the first royal procession of this year’s races, as the horses and carriages had been needed for the State Opening of Parliament in London on the first day of Ascot. The Queen and Prince Philip shared the first carriage, with Anne accompanying her grandmother behind them.
Amidst all the outsize and wacky headwear, Tiggy Pettifer made a gentle sartorial statement of her own with a large hat upon which a host of butterflies appeared to have settled. In a bold print, loose-fitting dress the heavily pregnant former royal nanny looked crisp and comfortable despite the day’s soaring temperatures.
