WILLEM-ALEXANDER AND MAXIMA ZORREGUIETA CELEBRATE AS THE DUTCH PARLIAMENT APPROVES THEIR UNION

Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his fiancee Maxima Zorreguieta happily toasted their future together after a joint session of the Dutch parliament approved their impending nuptials on Tuesday. All Dutch weddings pertaining to the succession require a special bill approved by both houses.

Some Dutch citizens argued that the wedding would wrongfully associate the questionable military history of Maxima’s father with their monarchy. Jorge Zorreguieta served as Argentina’s Agriculture Minister under the military dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla, whose regime was marked by the disappearance and killing of 30,000 people. Many withdrew their misgivings over the union after Jorge said he’d neither attend the wedding nor expect an invitation to future royal functions.

And now it seems the charming beauty, though not yet a member of the royal family, has won the hearts of the people as a recent poll proclaimed Maxima the most popular female member of the royal pantheon.

Willem-Alexander and Maxima first met at a chic Argentine holiday resort in the summer of 1999 are now set to wed on February 2, 2002.
