In his first in-depth interview since 1994, Prince Charles has addressed his future plans as they pertain to his longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles. When asked if the two would ever wed, Charles replied: “Will I be alive tomorrow? Who knows what the Good Lord has planned? You can’t be certain about anything. I don’t know.”
The Prince's words were seen as significant because they were not an outright rejection of the possibility of remarriage.
“I just think it is important, particularly as I get older, to think about the journey that’s coming next,” Charles told UK tabloid The Daily Mail.
The Prince of Wales also spoke about his relationship with Princes William and Harry. Calling the boys “terrific”, Charles said he was “very lucky to have them”. The three, who’ve recently been spotted playing polo together, have been more playful of late, the Prince reports.
“You can attempt to impose rules and regulations, but those don’t always work,” says the heir to the throne. “I try to pull their legs before they pull mine off by the roots. I’m a great believer in teasing.”
However, he asserts that his role isn’t to be their best friend. “There’s also a position you try to hold,” Charles says. “I don’t mean trying to enforce the unenforceable. I just hope that, by talking and explaining, they can become a bit more aware and wiser about life.”
But the Prince worries about his sons and how the public treatment of Diana affects them. “The truth is that the children mind about the way in which she is dealt with,” he says. “It must be quite difficult for them, I think. I wish people could just let her soul rest in peace without all these constant reminders.”
Charles, who said he hopes to put the “Great” back into Britain, discussed his work with the Prince’s Trust. “The real challenge is to tackle the most alienated young,” he said, as his fund celebrates its 25th anniversary.
“I mind very much about this country and the people who live in it.”
