Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby made a trip to the Big Apple last year on a mission to beef up her wardrobe for her new job – that of future Queen of Norway. But, unlike most girls, the bride-to-be was not jumping for joy at the prospect of Fifth Avenue shopping, where she spent around $21,000 on new threads.
“Before, I used to love shopping,” stated the willowy blonde in a recent newspaper interview, “but now it’s just stressful. Sure, buying clothes is fantastic for most girls, but not so great for me. What has effectively happened is that all of a sudden I need to have a good wardrobe for my new role in life. And I certainly didn’t have very many ballgowns before I met Haakon,” she adds, drily.
Crown Prince Haakon of Norway’s fiancée, who bears a striking resemblance to her intended, favours jeans and colourful wool jumpers when out incognito on the streets. The few royal engagements she has participated in this year however, show that the Norwegian beauty is most comfortable in a retro-modern look, with many of her outfits giving a nod to the Twenties, with dropped waists and cloche hats. Perhaps she will be a queen for the 21st Century and be the first wife of a monarch with a truly unique pared-down style.
“Going to New York to buy loads of suits is not that much fun,” she mused in the interview. “And another thing, if I went to New York it was because I was unable to buy these clothes in Oslo without being followed.”
