Fans of Norwegian newlyweds Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit gathered at Copenhagen port on Monday morning expecting to greet the pair as the royal yacht was set to dock. However, it seems the happy couple had slipped away in the night and are now honeymooning at an unknown locale.
The crown prince and his bride had boarded the Norge on Sunday following their fairy-tale nuptials and set sail for Copenhagen. However, when the luxury liner arrived at 10am on Monday, Captain Frank Bondo gave his crew time off and declined to comment on where the royals had been let off.
“They were the only guests on board and they disembarked in Denmark early Monday,” was all the captain would say, adding that the couple had been exhausted and spent much of their time on the yacht relaxing.
And while speculation on their whereabouts is running rampant, the crown princess' much-discussed fear of flying suggests they’re nearby. One theory has the two lounging below deck, despite reports to the contrary. However, others believe the newlyweds have hired a luxury bus not unlike those used by rock stars and are en route to Danish Queen Margrethe’s castle in the south of France.
Haakon has taken a page out of his father’s book in making his post-wedding plans. King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their own nuptials by disembarking after a short cruise down the Olso Fjord and taking up at Skaugum, their royal estate.
The Norge is scheduled to return to Norway next Wednesday, with or without the couple.
When Haakon and Mette-Marit do return home they’ll have countless gifts to open including everything from wool gloves for the winter to 12 bottles of top shelf brandy bottled the day the Crown Prince was born. Other presents include a set of dishes from the Emperor of Japan and donations to their Humanitarian Fund.
