Prince Charles cancelled a planned holiday with longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles this week amidst concerns about the Queen Mother’s health. The Prince of Wales had been scheduled to fly to the Red Sea’s Aqaba resort as a guest of the King and Queen of Jordan, but cancelled the getaway at the last minute and is said to be spending time in Scotland in order to be close to his ailing grandmother.
Insiders see Charles’s move as a sign of the Queen Mother’s deteriorating health. Cancelling a visit to a monarch is not a decision made lightly, and royal watchers say the heir to the throne is likely to have serious concerns about the centenarian’s condition. The holiday was to be Charles and Camilla’s only trip abroad this year.
“He simply does not want to be out of the country while his grandmother is unwell,” reports a source close to Charles. “He is devoted to her and wants to be on hand.” The nation’s favourite grandmother has been staying at Birkhall mansion on the Balmoral royal estate under the care of Dr Ashley Mowatt.
Although she was diagnosed with anaemia shortly before her 101st birthday last month, she has kept up a heavy schedule of public appearances, but missed out on the Braemar Games last weekend. It was later revealed that she had been in the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary undergoing tests. However, she attended church on Sunday.
The palace has remained silent about Charles’s change of plans, saying: “A private holiday is a private matter.” And while many fear the worst, others simply say the young Prince William’s impending move to university was behind the cancelled holiday.
