The Duchess of York had a lucky escape from the carnage wreaked by Tuesday’s terrorist attack on New York. Sarah was in town in connection with her charity Chances for Children, which had offices in one of the World Trade Center Towers, and she had planned to drop by the organisation later in the day. “Luckily they had not set off for the Trade Center when the tragic incidents took place,” said her spokeswoman.
Sarah’s presence in the Big Apple may have saved the lives of her fellow Chances for Children charity workers, who were with her at the time rather than at their desks in the doomed tower.
By the end of the day both buildings, once a symbol of America’s economic might, were reduced to a pile of rubble and twisted metal.
As the tragic events unfolded, Fergie’s ex, Prince Andrew, was also bound for the States. He was en route to Atlanta, where he was scheduled to attend an event as chairman of the board of trustees of the Outward Bound organisation, before flying on to New York. The plane in which he was travelling was already airborne when news of the events in New York broke, but headed home upon learning of the situation.
All US-bound flights from Gatwick, the airport outside London from which the Prince’s plane had taken off, were ordered to return to the UK.
