Queen Elizabeth II is truly a royal for the new millennium having just received her first mobile phone. Prince Andrew reportedly gave his mum the high-tech gadget and she is said to be smitten with it.
“It was a bit of a novelty at first and took some time for her to master,” a senior courtier told UK tabloid The Sun. “But now it is second nature for her, like it is to most people.”
And while the Queen vows not to use the phone in public, she has taken her new toy with her to both Sandringham and Balmoral to keep in touch with loved ones. “If the Queen is walking on a royal estate, miles from a land line phone, she can stay in contact,” says one palace aide.
The Palace has remained mum on the mobile phone front – “We don’t discuss private gifts between members of the Royal Family,” says a spokesman – but insiders say she’s enjoying the gadget. Prince Andrew has programmed in her children’s phone numbers so she can call them at the touch of a button.
However, just because the Queen has a mobile don’t expect you’ll ring her by mistake. “VIPs often get extra security,” says one telecom expert. “It means they never get a wrong number call – and no one gets their number.”
