QUEEN RANIA OF JORDAN CUTS A DAZZLING FIGURE ON AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO BRITAIN

Queen Rania of Jordan joined her husband King Abdullah II on an official visit to London on Tuesday, charming members of the British monarchy and the public alike with her beauty and stately demeanour. Dressed in a navy coat with her dark hair swept up in a chignon, Rania cut a stunning figure alongside the Duke of Edinburgh in an open carriage en route to Windsor Castle. And she was equally striking at Tuesday evening’s banquet held in her and her husband’s honour.

In a rare gesture, Queen Elizabeth used the gala to make an overtly political statement. She addressed concerns over the current conflict in Afghanistan, and expressed her support for Muslims in Britain, saying: “This is not a conflict between Islam and the West, but rather between decent people of all faiths and terrorism.”

“My country cherishes its tradition of tolerance and mutual respect, which permits people of different faiths and cultures to live and work together,” she continued. “Following the tragic events of September 11, all of us, whatever our religion or background, have an added responsibility to ensure that those who are intent on stirring up hatred, fear and prejudice in this country do not succeed.”

The Queen, joined by Prince Philip, later expressed her hope that “the people of Jordan and all the peoples of the region may at last enjoy the security, stability and prosperity they deserve.”

King Abdullah echoed the Queen’s sentiments in his dinner address. “My goal, simply put, is a fair and balanced resolution – justice for the Palestinian people and security for Israel, and one that realises the right of Palestinians to a viable, independent state and respects Israel’s right to exist.

“Jordan will continue to play its full part in countering the evil of terrorism. Jordanians were filled with horror at the events in America, but we are also filled with resolve to create a safer world.”

Assembled guests at the St George’s Hall gala dined on turbot and salmon terrine, rack of lamb and mango melba. The 31-year-old Rania – in town for a three-day state visit – chose a figure-hugging gown and sparkling tiara for the ball.

King Abdullah is scheduled to meet with business representatives on Wednesday and lunch with Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street on Thursday. He is also set to meet British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon at Buckingham Palace to discuss the current terrorism crisis.

The Jordanian monarch had been due to make this week’s visit a year ago, but postponed the trip as tensions rose in the Middle East. King Abdullah met with Tony Blair for talks just last week as the prime minister toured the troubled region.
