Three-year-old Elise Lindberg caused a bit of a stir this week while Prince Haakon and his wife were visiting the charming old town of Fredrikstad. Eager to get a proper look at the future king and queen, the tiny tot managed to worm her way through the legs of security guards before ending up safe and sound in Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s arms. Elise’s big sister, five-year-old Stine, wanted in on the act too and also received a warming hug from Prince Haakon’s bride.
The newlyweds' visit to Fredrikstad on Tuesday attracted scores of children and Norway’s beautiful crown princess, who has a young son of her own from a previous relationship, just couldn’t resist picking some of them up. Not to be outdone, her husband was soon embracing the local youngsters who lined the streets with their parents.
Haakon and Mette-Marit had set off several days earlier on a second “meet the people” tour. The crown princess had carried out her first official duty as a member of the royal family in October when she mingled with the people of Norway, giving some their first real-life view of the much-photographed couple. This time, much of the official visit was spent getting to know the local children - after leaving Fredrikstad, the royal couple delighted toddlers when they paid a visit to a kindergarten in Rade, near the Swedish border.
