Her arm intertwined with her husband’s, a frail-looking Countess of Wessex said she was “much better” as she left King Edward VII Hospital on Monday. She had been in hospital since last Thursday, when she had an emergency operation for an ectopic pregnancy.
Wearing an earth-toned tweed jacket and black turtleneck sweater, 36-year-old Sophie walked out of hospital supported by Prince Edward. Asked by one journalist how she was doing, the Countess waved and replied, “Much better, thank you.” Though she smiled warmly as she was greeted by reporters and well-wishers, she appeared to be in some pain, wincing as she stepped into a waiting car.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said doctors had decided Sophie was well enough to be discharged, but, he added, “She continues to rest and recuperate because she is still very tired.” The Palace also stated that members of the Royal Family had not visited the Countess during her four-night hospital stay on the advice of her doctors, who said the number of visitors should be kept to a minimum.
Visiting his wife on Saturday, Prince Edward told reporters outside the hospital that Sophie was “getting better… gradually, you know, like any of these things, recovering and a little bit tired”. She is now said to be resting at home, and it is thought her recovery may take up to six weeks.
