Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer wed fiancée Caroline Freud on Saturday at a quiet family ceremony at his Althorp home. Just 80 guests were on hand for the nuptials – the second for both – including TV comedian Harry Enfield and Notting Hill scribe Richard Curtis, however, neither Prince William nor Prince Harry turned out for their uncle’s celebrations.

Caroline, divorced from famed PR executive Matthew Freud, wore a full-length red gown and stunning diamonds once owned by Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. Following the brief service, guests including the couple’s six children sat down amidst red roses and ivy in the estate’s Picture Gallery for a beautifully presented supper.

Prince Charles was reportedly not on the guest list. The pair have weathered a frosty relationship since the Earl made a series of pointed comments against the Windsors at Diana’s funeral.

The 34-year-old bride, known to close friends as Pidge, will become Countess Spencer.

The two announced their engagement in October, with the former schoolteacher calling the Earl “a very romantic man”. The newlyweds met as students at Oxford and have enjoyed a close friendship over the years.

Diana’s brother, 37, was previously wed to former model Victoria Lockwood, but the two split acrimoniously in 1997. They had four children together.

Caroline parted with Matthew Freud – a great-grandson of legendary thinker Sigmund Freud – in 1997. He later wed Elisabeth Murdoch, heir to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, in August of this year.
