Crown Prince Felipe of Spain has announced a split with his Norwegian girlfriend, model Eva Sannum, a decision made “freely and by mutual agreement,” he said.
“For strictly personal reasons, we will go our own ways,” said the hugely popular heir to the Spanish throne. “The relationship did not thrive, period. I hope we can enjoy a lasting friendship.”
Although there is always intense public speculation over a possible bride for the 33-year-old prince, and the news of the break-up caused a major stir across the country over the weekend, the palace had never officially recognised the couple, with a spokesperson simply calling it a “friendship” in the past. Had the relationship led to an engagement, it would have been the first time in the country’s history that a commoner married a future king of Spain.
In an interview to mark his 30th birthday, Felipe discussed the issue of marriage. “I do not feel obliged to marry someone of royal blood,” he said. “But I’m not closing the door on that option either. It will be a relationship based on love, respect and kindness.”
