Like many high-profile newlyweds, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his new wife Princess Maxima were hoping to keep their post-wedding plans private. But just one day after their spectacular nuptials, the Dutch heir to the throne and his Argentine bride were spotted in Switzerland, heading off to a top secret honeymoon.
A Swiss police spokesman confirmed that the newlyweds landed in Zurich Kloten, the country’s largest airport, the day after their romantic wedding in Amsterdam, but would not disclose their final destination. A Swiss radio station reported the sporting couple were headed to the Grisons alps southeast of Zurich, an area famed for its luxury ski resorts, including Klosters, a frequent holiday spot for Prince Charles and his sons.
Many have speculated that Willem-Alexander and Maxima plan a whirlwind winter holiday, jetting to Salt Lake City, where the Olympics are set to begin on Friday. However, a spokesman for the couple insists that the honeymoon location will remain a secret. “We can’t say anything,” said a spokesman. “It’s a private matter.”
The crown prince and Maxima Zorreguieta, 30, were married on Saturday in a ceremony watched live by millions around the world. The three-day wedding celebrations were attended by a virtual who’s who of international royalty and statesmen, including the Prince of Wales, former South African President Nelson Mandela, and royals from Monaco, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Japan.
