Speculation about where Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and his new wife Princess Maxima would spend their honeymoon ended this week when the two were spotted enjoying a ski holiday in Switzerland. The two left Amsterdam soon after their wedding celebrations last Saturday, and after a brief stopover in London to see Maxima’s parents, landed in the winter sports region late Sunday.
Photographers snapped the smiling couple enjoying their first days together as husband and wife on the snow-covered slopes of St Moritz. The royal newlyweds were seen arriving at Zurich Kloten, Switzerland’s largest airport, over the weekend but until now their final destination remained a mystery.
Before they kicked off their honeymoon, the royal couple flew to the UK to visit Maxima’s parents, who had watched the wedding on television at their London hotel. Jorge Zorreguieta and Carmen Cerruti were not permitted to take part in their daughter’s big day as Mr Zorreguieta’s links to Argentina’s oppressive military government, for which he served as minister of Agriculture, had created controversy in the Netherlands.
Willem-Alexander and Maxima may be set to continue their honeymoon with a trip to the Winter Olympics, as Willem-Alexander is a member of the event’s international committee.
