Prince Charles was showered with gifts during a walkabout in the town square of Cracow on Wednesday, on his first visit to the Polish city since 1993.
“For me it really is a joy to be back here in Cracow after nine years,” he said. “I have been looking forward to seeing the changes that have taken place, all for the better, here in this special city.
The crowds that had gathered to greet Charles gave him dozens of roses, and two vendors from a local flower stall, wearing traditional dress, presented him with a beautiful bouquet of the blooms. The Prince, on a tour focused on environmental issues, also graciously accepted a Britain-themed painting from a pair of 12-year-old schoolboys.
Charles’s two-day trip to Poland, which included cutting the ribbon at an installation of UK artists at the British Council, came after a tour of nearby Germany. During that leg of his tour, he was awarded an environment prize from the European Natural Heritage Foundation for his work in ecology. He rounded out the trip with a visit to an organic farm in Trenthorst, and also had a laugh in Berlin, after viewing a 22-year-old photograph of himself, complete with moustache, at a British Embassy Golden Jubilee exhibition.
