The Duchess of York is continuing her flourishing career Stateside, signing a development deal for a one-hour syndicated chat show. Already a celebrity in America as a spokesperson for WeightWatchers, author of children’s books, and special correspondent for US network NBC, the flame-haired ex-wife of Prince Andrew looks ready to make a permanent move to New York City if her latest endeavour finds similar success.
Sarah's £500,000 deal with Universal Television Enterprises for Fergie means the Duchess will have to spend much of her time in the Big Apple. Should the pilot, which is scheduled to be aired in the 2003-2004 television season, catch on, Sarah will be based in New York, dividing her time between America and the UK, where her two daughters currently live.
The 42-year-old, who had a short-lived show, Sarah, Surviving Life on SkyOne, says she’s ready to take on the new project, which will pit her against the likes of Ricki Lake and the soon-to-be-retired Oprah Winfrey. “I enjoy being with people, so I’ll feel in my element with a daily talk show,” she says. “I am constantly inspired by the many people I meet.”
Studio bosses says the show “captures her warmth, humour, honesty and passion for life”, and Universal president Steve Rosenberg is certain of the Duchess’ appeal for American TV audiences. “Sarah is an amazing person and a one-of-a-kind talent who is perfect for television,” he says. “There’s no one else like her.”
