The Beverley Sisters took the Queen on a trip down memory lane on Thursday when they staged a repeat of the monarch’s first Royal Command Performance, in which they starred as young girls.
The sisters, Joy, Teddie and Babs, are currently reprising their 1952 show, alongside Max Bygraves, at the Broadway Theatre in Catford, south London. It was there that the monarch stopped by to wish them luck before their performance. The Queen, who is on the latest leg of her Golden Jubilee tour, was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.
Max, who turns 80 next month, told the monarch: “I did the last Royal Performance for your father and your very first in 1952.”
Joy Beverley added: “We were all on the same bill and here we all are, 50 years later, still singing in your reign.”
When Prince Philip asked the sisters to perform something from the show, they did an impromptu version of Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree, which was one of the songs they sang 50 years ago.
Twins Teddy and Beverley told the Queen she was working very hard during her Jubilee tour. “If our agent had booked such a busy tour, we would have sacked him,” said Teddy.
