Just hours after Prince Joachim’s wife Alexandra gave birth to the couple’s second child on Monday, the 33-year-old son of Queen Margrethe of Denmark revealed to reporters: “I wiped away a tear when I saw my second son arrive into the world.”
Speaking at a press conference outside Copenhagen’s university hospital, where the infant was born earlier that morning, a smiling Joachim described the newest addition to the royal family. “He is blond,” said the prince. “But it’s quite hard to say now what colour his eyes will be.”
The handsome royal also revealed that he had cut the baby’s umbilical cord – a role he also undertook when his first son, Prince Nikolai, was born in August, 1999. And, as on the first occasion, he also videotaped the birth.
“In spite of everything, this time I wasn’t about to faint, as I did the first time,” he said. “It must be that practice makes perfect.”
Though the baby – who arrived over a week early – and mum are said to be fine, Joachim says it was “a difficult birth. The princess did not sleep a lot last night.” On Monday, however, Alexandra was surrounded by the support of family members, including Queen Margarethe and husband Prince Henrik, who arrived late in the afternoon to meet their second grandchild.
