The first of Prince Harry’s 18th birthday portraits, in which the young royal is captured on film by renowned photographer Mario Testino, was released on Friday.

The photo sessions, which were videoed, appear to have been a relaxed affair, with Mario and the Prince sharing a laugh as they shot the pictures on the campus of Eton College. The results, a set of portraits that include a close-up black and white photograph as well as a posed snap with Harry in his prized polo gear, are bound to appeal to the popular Prince’s many admirers.

Harry isn't the first member of the royal family to sit for the famed photographer. Mario was a favourite of his mother Diana, and his father Charles also commissioned him to take a series of shots earlier this year.

Famed for his sense of humour, the handsome royal, who turns 18 this Sunday, showed his serious side as he made his first solo official outing to a project for homeless young people this week. The visit was part of Harry’s wish to take an active part in charitable causes as a tribute to his mother.

“There is another side to Harry, a sensitivity and vulnerability, which is only now beginning to come to light,” says one royal watcher.
