Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh’s voyage in a Canadian water taxi hit a glitch on Tuesday after the vessel suddenly broke down in the middle of Winnipeg’s famous Red River. The royal couple were temporarily left stranded as officials organised a quick rescue.

The Queen and 81-year-old Prince Philip took the minor incident in their stride, however, with the monarch commenting simply: “That was interesting.”

Tuesday’s boat trip was just one event scheduled for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee tour of the North American country. Her Royal Highness also took time to meet members of the Manitoba Corgi association and their pets. Patting two of the dogs on show, she remarked: “They don’t seem to mind being here.”

Cold temperatures have been constant during the visit, and the Queen donned a fur coat for the second time as she rededicated Winnipeg’s restored Golden Boy statue, and watched an outdoor ballet performance in her honour. Prince Philip and the monarch also braved the weather as they watched a 30-minute outdoor cultural display from the banks of the Red River.
