When Prince Charles met with singers Will Young and Gareth Gates backstage at the Pop Idol stars’ sell-out Prince’s Trust charity concert on Thursday, the topic of conversation wasn’t exactly what one might have expected. As the two heart-throbs prepared to perform in front of a sell-out Wembley Arena crowd of 12,000 fans, their chat with the heir to the throne turned to – what else – fashion.
Taking a look at Gareth’s trendy leather jacket, studded belt and ripped jeans, the Prince, who was sporting a double-breasted suit, reportedly mused: “I must remember to get my trousers distressed.”
Style advice aside, the threesome also discussed Will and Gareth’s hit The Long And Winding Road after the Prince asked how they were enjoying chart success. The backstage visit later included a royal meet-and-greet with Spice Girl Emma Bunton and another Pop Idol star, 17-year-old Zoe Birkett.
Meanwhile, soft drink company Pepsi issued a statement denying widespread reports Gareth had been “axed” from their roster of celebrity spokespeople. However, it looks like his one-year deal will not be renewed. “Gareth was always on a one-year contract,” said the Pepsi representative. “He has exceeded our expectations and we are delighted with his success. We wish him all the best in the future.”
