The wife of former royal butler Paul Burrell has spoken out about her love for her husband of 18 years in the wake of numerous allegations made against him earlier in the week. Speaking during the couple's trip to New York, the 46-year-old former housemaid was unequivocal in her continuing support and affection.
"I love my husband, always loved him and always will. We're definitely stronger because of all this." Addressing claims over his sexuality she said: "We have a bond, a love and true friendship which have been the foundation of our marriage and have sustained us for 18 years." She went on to add: "There have been episodes of Paul's life that of which I am fully aware and always have been. But that is ancient history and our relationship is stronger today than it has ever been."
In the interview in the Daily Mirror Maria told of her husband's kindness, thoughtfulness, and loyalty. "All these slurs they are writing about him now, it's so nasty, so cruel. If I could stand on a soapbox in Trafalgar Square and tell everyone how he doesn't deserve this, and how much it's all hurting us, then I would." Despite her comments, witnesses at New York's Millennium Broadway Hotel where the couple is staying while Paul takes part in a series of TV talk shows, say relations between the pair have been stormy. "They were going at it hammer and tongs," said one. "He tried to calm her down but she was having none of it. There are eruptions going on here." Meanwhile, friends of the couple have voiced concern over the effect of the situation on Paul and Maria's two teenage sons, Alexander, 17, and 15-year-old Nicholas.
