Monaco's royal family stepped out on to the balcony of the red and white-bedecked royal palace on Tuesday to observe the tiny principality's official National Day ceremonies. However, as Prince Albert and Princesses Caroline and Stephanie took their traditional places to greet the crowds, one important figure was absent from the scene – Prince Rainier.
The 79-year-old ruler was still in hospital recovering from a respiratory infection, and was unable to participate in the special event. However, despite his illness, he had directed from his hospital bed that celebrations – which also included military parade and evening black-tie gala – should take place as usual.
Prince Rainier, who has a long history of health problems and underwent a heart bypass in 1999, had checked into a cardio-respiratory clinic on Saturday. The royal palace later reported that he was suffering from a bronchial infection.
On Tuesday, the palace press service said the prince's health had "markedly improved", and he is expected to be well enough to leave hospital this week. However, he will then spend about ten days recovering at home before returning to official duties.
