King Abdullah II of Jordan and his wife Queen Rania made a visit to the paediatric ward of a cancer centre named in honour of the monarch's late father on Tuesday.
Abdullah and Rania took time to chat with doctors, young patients and their families at the King Hussein Cancer Centre in Amman – the only children and adult comprehensive care facility in the region.
The fight against the disease is one that is closely associated with the striking queen, who earlier this month joined stars such as Robert DeNiro and Susan Sarandon at a star-studded New York benefit in aid of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health. The centre was founded in honour of US newscaster Katie Couric's late husband, who died of colon cancer in 1998.
Tuesday's visit to the children's cancer centre was the royal couple's latest endeavour to support a cause that hits very close to home. Abdullah II's father, King Hussein, passed away from lymphatic cancer in 1999 after a long battle with the disease. Soon after his death, Queen Rania produced a charity children's book, The King's Gift, in his memory.
