James Hewitt, former favourite of the Princess Diana, may be declared bankrupt as a result of tax debts. The man dubbed "royal cad" following his revelations of his relationship with the late Princess is being taken to court by Customs And Excise over alleged VAT irregularities, and is understood to be being sued for tens of thousands of pounds.
Hewitt, who is a former Army tank commander, is registered as a business and therefore liable to pay tax on his earnings. A hearing has been set for January 23.
The 44-year-old's kiss-and-tell book deal based on his liaison with Diana is understood to have been a lucrative one. He also earns fees for public speaking and he has recently portrayed himself in a new film entitled Tabloid.
"James has undoubtedly made a lot of money – and he has also spent a lot," a friend of the ex-Army officer is quoted as saying in The Sun on Friday. "He enjoys the good things of life. However, I am sure he will be vigorously contesting any action to make him bankrupt."
