Some onlookers were no doubt surprised to see Prince Charles sporting what looked like a string bracelet during a royal visit to Connaught Barracks in Dover. The heir to the throne was taking tea with families at the base when photographers snapped the red and white accessory on the Prince's wrist.
The simple bracelet was more than just a casual adornment, however. It is a traditional Bulgarian bracelet, which Charles was given during an official visit to the country. In eastern Europe it is a widely-observed tradition to wear the bracelet until the first sign of spring blossom.
Prince Charles was visiting the Parachute Regiment base to meet with wives, girlfriends and families of soldiers that have left for the Gulf. In his capacity as Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment, he will be making a series of visits to concerned families living on military bases around the UK.
His morale-boosting effort came after his mother sent a message of support to British troops taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. "My thoughts are with you all and your families and friends who wait at home for news and pray for your safe return," she said.
