After lengthy negotiations between police and the Spencer family, Scotland Yard has decided to return hundreds of items which belonged to the late Princess of Wales.
The move means that Prince William will be reunited with the correspondence which became known as "the wombat cards" in reference to Diana's nickname for her eldest son. Each of the letters is addressed to "My Darling Wombat" and they are thought to be extremely precious to Wills.
Scotland Yard has been in possession of some 310 of the Princess' personal belongings since the trial of former royal butler Paul Burrell, who was accused of stealing her possessions, collapsed last year.
Mr Burrell, the Spencer family and the Royal Collection, on behalf of the Queen, have been negotiating the release of the items ever since. It is understood that agreement has been reached on all but a few of the articles, which include everything from handbags and dresses to personal photographs and silverwear.
Among the pieces that remain in dispute are jewellery and videotapes in which the Princess discusses her childhood. "Negotiations continue to establish ownership of a small number of items still in our possession," said a Scotland Yard spokesman. "If there is a dispute, the matter will be taken to the High Court to be resolved by civil action."
